One of the best ways to get hooked on freshwater fishing is to find a few easily accessible places where you can fish by foot. If you’re a new angler, or just one that happens to be without a boat, don’t pout about not being able to find good spots. You can still find plenty of decent places to freshwater fishing spots sans boat. Plus, if you are just learning how to fish, it makes more sense to hone your skills from land first without having to worry about navigating a boat at the same time.
For me, fishing by foot might equate to something as simple as fishing in a local pond or as adventurous as making a trek down to the Tamiami Trail. If you’re wondering how to start scouting out a few good spots for “fishing by foot,” these tips might help.
- Use the “Places to Fish” map at TakeMeFishing.org. This map tool will show you where there are parks and bodies of water nearest to your city, state and zip code. You can also find links to purchase your state fishing license online or check the current freshwater fishing regulations.
- Use the “Fishing Spot and Lake Maps” at BassResource.com. You can pull up a map by city and state or zip code. These online maps also include all nearby bodies of water.
- Download the Finygo app for your mobile phone. This is a fishing app that gives you access to fishing tips for your area, including waterway maps and bait or lure suggestions.
- Call the Fish and Wildlife Commission or Department of Natural Resources in your state. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s website, for example, offers a list of top freshwater fisheries and associated fishing forecasts. Many of the top fisheries offer some form of bank or shoreline access.
