Pinfish are a very common baitfish used for inshore saltwater fishing due to a wide appeal to a variety of gamefish. Redfish, snook, trout, snapper and tarpon will all find pinfish appetizing. Pinfish are also easy to catch and keep alive.
When handling these baits, keep in mind that pinfish are aptly named. For novice anglers, the first time you grab one you may experience firsthand what the “pin” in pinfish stands for. Hold the bait firmly near the head and gills without squeezing too hard and while being mindful of the spiny dorsal fins.
When fishing inshore in situations with fast moving current, hook the pinfish under the chin and out through the nostril area. This will allow the bait to swim in the current in a way that is as natural as possible.
