After coming across a photo of Katie Bernotsky on the Facebook Page, I had to find out more about this kayak fisherwoman and feature her in the spotlight on our blog! She hooked this beautiful 6.51 lb bass on a PowerTeam Lures, green pumpkin 10” Ribbon Hinge Worm at the Sandy River Reservoir in central Virginia by pitching into a large laydown in 12 feet of water.
How did you first get into fishing?
Katie: My dad introduced me to fishing at the age of 5 but I got more seriously into it when I met my husband 8 years ago. He introduced me to bass fishing and ever since then it’s become my passion.
Who is your biggest fishing inspiration?
Katie: Definitely my husband, Bob. He’s a great angler and has been a great mentor to me.
What’s your favorite type of fishing?
Katie: By far, my favorite type of fishing is freshwater for bass. I love bass fishing out of a kayak. It’s a great way to combine my two favorite hobbies, fishing and exercise.
Have a favorite brand of reel?
Katie: I’m partial to Shimano due to the brand’s reputation for reliability and durability.
Do you regularly participate in tournaments?
Katie: I’ve just recently got into tournament bass fishing. I’ve fished a couple benefit tournaments that raised money for Breast Cancer and Heart Disease.
Do you typically fish with your husband or do you have an occasional “girls day out on the water?”
Katie: Yes, I mostly fish with my husband and occasionally with other couples.
Can you give us a few destinations and species that are on your “fishing bucket list”?
Katie: I’m dying to catch a big striper and a big musky out of the kayak. Not too particular about where and when, I just want them on the end of my line!
Any advice you would give to other women interested in learning how to fish?
Katie: Be patient. There’s a lot to learn. Be open to stepping out of your comfort zone. The more techniques you know, the more successful you will be because every day on the water is different.
