Whether you prefer to jig (I’m not talking a little dance either) or toss a pass crab, there are few places on earth quite like Boca Grande when it comes to tarpon fishing. Known as the “Tarpon Capital of the World,” Boca Grande Pass is situated midway between Sarasota and Ft. Myers. The pass is a place that turns into the best kind of mass angling insanity with the arrival of spring… and the silver kings.
When to Go
During the months of April, May and June, this area experiences one of world’s largest tarpon migrations. Thousands of fish in the 50 to 85 pound range can be found feeding in Boca Grande Pass, with a considerable number tipping the scales between 100 and 200 pounds.
Where to Look
Tarpon tend to school up in the deepest parts of the Pass. The Boca Grande Hole being one of those areas that measures approximately 100 yards wide by 350 yards long and averaging 65-70 feet deep. The remainder of the Pass averages around 40 feet deep.
What to Keep in Mind
Boca Grande Pass is far from being a place for the novice boater or angler. Boat traffic in the pass can be extremely heavy on the weekends, and fishing enthusiasts who are not aware of the established procedures for boat operation in the area can create unsafe conditions. I suggest you hire an experienced charter guide to ensure you have the best experience possible.
