When it comes to fishing, there are quite a few secrets that anglers like to keep. For example, how many times have you witnessed a positive reaction from an angler when asked by a stranger to share the coordinates of his favorite spot? Bet you a dollar to a hole in a doughnut that the answer will be “ZERO!” Aside from keeping hot spots on the down low, there are a few other details about fishing that most people aren’t likely to reveal.
- You don’t need hundreds of dollars for gear or tackle. You can fish from the shore of a nearby lake using a basic spinning combo. Check Bass Pro Shops or your local tackle shop for a starter combo such as the Pflueger Trion (medium power with 10 lb line).
- Unless you are deep sea fishing miles offshore, or are in a remote destination, you will still have cell phone service. There are cell phone towers everywhere these days. Now, if you don’t WANT to use your phone because you’d rather focus on fishing, I can totally understand and relate to that.
- Fishing trips can be a fantastic networking and conversational tool. Almost everyone has at least one or two “fish tales” they like to share. There’s something about the experience of catching your first perch with your grandfather, reeling in a bunch of bluegills with your cousins, or hiking to a nearby pond to hook a few catfish with your childhood chums that inspires you want to share with others, so do it.
- Leave the alcoholic beverages behind. Aside from the fact that it’s illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in every state, you’ll have more success if you’re sharp and focused. Good judgment, vision, balance and coordination are all things you need to have when fishing.
- Shouting at your significant other while they attempt to reel in or land a large fish is not conducive to a positive learning experience. Patience and calm instruction will help ensure that anglers new to the sport actually enjoy the experience versus feeling frustrated or defeated. Don’t forget to throw in a few encouraging words every once and awhile too, it’ll do wonders.
- If you are female, it is possible to go fishing without having to wear a bikini. In fact, if you live in a state like Florida and go fishing a few times every week, make sure you’re properly stocked up with fishing apparel that has UV protection. Besides, are you fishing for attention or fishing to become more skilled as an angler?
While it’s true that people aren’t always forthcoming about certain fishing related topics, don’t let it bother you. There are plenty of credible resources out there that can help you learn and develop your angling skills. Have a few favorites? Visit the Shefishes2 Facebook Page or comment on this post to share.
