About Debbie Hanson

As a Chicago area native, I was blessed to have had the experience of spending childhood summers fishing the lakes of Upper Michigan with my grandfather for bluegill, perch, and walleye. I’ll forever be grateful to my grandfather for taking me out on the water at a young age. However, throughout adolescence, I struggled to find myself and the courage to lead a life of purpose. One thing was certain, my love for fishing always remained constant. It was my primary source of empowerment and fulfillment.

Florida Is Home

Thankfully, a romantic relationship and my passion for the outdoors led me to the year-round warm temps and sunny skies of Florida. While the relationship didn’t last, I did fall deeply in love with the natural beauty of the Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel. To me, paradise was living in a place where I could create more cherished memories on the water with my family and friends.

Empowering Newcomers

While I have fished competitively through participation in several tournaments over the years (2003 Islamorada Women’s Sailfish Tournament, 2012 Chix-N-Stix Ladies Fishing Tournament, 2013 LCEC United Way Inshore Fishing Tournament, and 2013 Flats Invitational Redfish Challenge), I quickly learned that my greatest source of happiness came from introducing newcomers to the sport of fishing.

What better way to share my passion than to help educate and empower other women who have a true desire to learn? Hopefully my blog, articles, seminars, and speaking engagements will not only inspire other young women to get out on the water, but also encourage them to pursue their dreams.

Writing Experience

As a member of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association and the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America, my writing has been featured in a number of online and print publications. Believe it or not, I actually went to school for this writing and blogging stuff. After spending a few years in Macomb, IL, I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree from the Western Illinois University School of English & Journalism.

I just read your story, with a smile and tears you brought me back to my childhood and growing up. My grandfather was the one who taught me boats and fishing at an early age…through life I had set all that on the back burner and since I lost him almost 2 years ago I myself have been lost. I’ve found my connection again through the water. Thank you for your story, it truly touched me.

Thank you for taking the time to read and share your thoughts Sarah. That really means a lot to me, and I’m so glad to hear that you have found your connection with your grandfather again through the water.
